20 best engineering schools in the world for 2021

Criterion for being in the best list

This is a complete guide for selecting 20 best engineering schools in the world for 2021 to study engineering undergraduate courses. All the qualifying undergraduate engineering schools in the USA which have been included in this list have undergraduate engineering programs accredited by ABET. Ranking of undergraduate engineering

programs is based on:

  • the judgements of deans and senior faculty at peer institutions as per U.S. News survey
  • analysis of academic, admissions, financial, and student life data from the U.S. Department of Education
  • millions of reviews from students and alumni as collected by NICHE survey

The overall ranking of the global undergraduate programs is based on QS Ranking decided by academic Reputation and employer reputation survey.

Students may continue for further studies and research up to a doctorate.  Please note that good language test score is required by most global schools, particularly for international students. Refer to the best guides and study material for language test exam TOEFL.

Founded in 1209, The University of Cambridge is a collegiate research university in Cambridge, United Kingdom. Cambridge is the second-oldest university in the English-speaking world and the world’s fourth-oldest surviving university. The University of Cambridge engineering department is the largest department at the university. About 1200 (10% of all undergraduate students) study engineering.

The Engineering course at the University of Cambridge normally lasts four years and leads to two degrees: BA (with Honours) and MEng. The first two years of the course are essentially the same for all students and aim to give a broad overview of the subject, covering mechanical and structural engineering, as well as materials, electrical and information engineering. From the third year, the students are required to specialize. Manufacturing Engineering Tripos (MET) is offered, in addition to Engineering, as a distinct course. At the end of the third year, the students qualify for a BA (with Honours). However, the program is designed with a four-year structure leading to a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree. This is the academic qualification which carries with it accreditation by one of the professional engineering institutions as fully satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng). Students leaving after three years (which is extremely rare) would be leaving their professional education unfinished.

  1. California Institute of Technology

The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) is a world-renowned science and engineering institute in Pasadena, California, located in Los Angeles area. It was founded as a preparatory and vocational school by Amos G. Throop in 1891. It is small institution and about 230 new freshmen and 10 to 15 new transfer students join Caltech each fall. The undergraduate program leads to a four-year Bachelor of Science degree. Admitted students matriculate in the fall term only. Both teaching and research are fairly cross-disciplinary. Undergraduates declare a major at the end of their first year. Admissions are extremely competitive as the Caltech acceptance rate is only 7%. Popular majors include Computer Science, Physics, and Electrical Engineering. Three of the six academic divisions at the California Institute of Technology teach and research engineering and technology subjects: the biology and biological engineering division, the chemistry and chemical engineering division, and the engineering and applied science division.

The engineering and applied science (EAS) option offers students the opportunity for study in a wide variety of challenging areas of science and technology. The aim of the EAS option is to prepare students for research and professional practice in an era of rapidly advancing interdisciplinary technology. The first year of the four-year course of study leading to a Bachelor of Science degree is common for all students of the Institute, although freshman elective subjects are available as an introduction to various aspects of engineering and applied science. At the end of the first year, students who elect the EAS option are assigned advisers as close to their expressed field of interest as possible, and together with their advisers they develop programs of study for the next three years.

  1. University of Oxford United Kingdom

The University of Oxford is a collegiate research university in Oxford, England and it is oldest university in the English-speaking world and the world’s second-oldest university in continuous operation. Oxford university has 39 colleges and 6 private halls. Almost every student at Oxford is a member of a college. Most colleges admit both graduate and undergraduate students. The undergraduate admissions process is co-ordinated by the University, but colleges are ultimately responsible for selecting and admitting their undergraduate students. Just under half of all applicants for these courses get through to the interview round and 15 per cent secure a place on a course.

University of Oxford students are admitted for a specific engineering degree, differing from US universities where students can pick from various strands of engineering to study. Oxford has four-year courses in engineering science which lead to a Masters degree.

Many Oxford engineering graduates go on to careers as professional engineers, although some enter business, consultancy or further study.

Many Nobel laureates and notable people have studied here.

Years one and two follow a core programme covering the fundamentals of engineering in relevant area (e.g., electrical/computer science etc.) on specified modules. You will learn to analyse and optimise systems by modelling them. You will also focus on programming, with the chance to use the latest computing technologies.

In your third year, you tailor your degree to fit your interests and choose from a number of advanced topics that broaden and deepen the material covered in years one and two. You choose from a range of advanced subjects in relevant engineering area.

The most important part of this year is the individual project. It allows you to implement the technical information assimilated over the course of your degree, and develop novel approaches to present-day problems.

MEng students have the option to complete a six-month industrial placement, gaining valuable skills and experience by solving real engineering problems. Alternatively, you can take part in a three-month group project, acting as technical consultants to a brief provided by an industrial client. This involves specifying and designing, implementing and testing a pre-production prototype of a new product or technical solution.

The fourth and final year of the integrated Master’s course offers a wide choice of advanced modules based on state-of-the-art research carried out in the Department. Studying to this level means that graduates require fewer years of work experience to become a Chartered Engineer (see Professional accreditation).

Duration and Credits required

There are two credit systems: that used by UK universities, and the ECTS used by a number of other European countries. Oxford takes each year of full-time study to equal 120 UK credits (undergraduate) and 180 UK credits (postgraduate) according to the Higher Education Credit Framework for England. In relation to the ECTS, this is equivalent to 60 credits for undergraduate study and 60-90 credits for postgraduate study. The University’s courses are not taught on a modular basis so Oxford does not apply credit weightings to the individual components of your course.

Cost of Study and living per year

The total annual fee including college and university fees for undergraduate study is £9,250 for UK/EU students and £36,065 for Overseas students. Living costs are extra and are estimated for the academic year starting in 2020 to be between £1,135 and £1,650 for each month you are in Oxford.

Home/EU undergraduate and PGCE students can access a tuition fee loan from the UK government to cover their course fee in full.
